About us
History
Channing’s 4 star hotel in Edinburgh has a very interesting history with a fascinating link to the Antartic Explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.
In April 1904, after Shackleton was named Secretary of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, he moved into 14 South Learmouth Gardens, Edinburgh, where he stayed with his wife until 1910.
Channings, opened in 1990 as an Edwardian Edinburgh town house hotel merging the homes of 12 -16 Learmonth Gardens. Shackleton, who lived in number 14, would now find his home designated as the guest's Library and the Kingsleigh Drawing Room.

Environmental Policy
We recognize that the nature of our services results in an overall impact on the environment and that by conducting our business in a responsible and thoughtful; we can reduce that impact and act to improve the quality of the environment where appropriate. We are currently at the Silver award level of the Green Tourism Business scheme, an environmental award scheme which has helped businesses across Scotland in the tourist industry lessen the impact on the environment. We are now working towards Gold by implementing further environmental measures. Which include:
* Recycling as much glass, plastic, paper, cardboard and cans as possible, including all the newspapers left behind in the bedrooms.
* Fitting virtually all standard lamps in the bedrooms and many more lights throughout the hotel with energy saving light bulbs to lower our energy consumption.
* To initiate water saving devices in the toilet cisterns and to aim to have all bathrooms with aerated taps, both of which help to save water in our hotel. The public toilets already have infra-red sensors to regulate the flow of water in the urinals.
There are many more measures that involve our guests such as walks, wildlife, bike hire and local bus timetable information, all of which are available with one click. Our committed Green Team meets every month to discuss new ideas for expanding our efforts further.
Please contact our Environmental Manager if you have any queries or suggestions.
